Core Worksheet #24

A. THESIS: Out of the two paintings, the first painting reflects economic success of the Dutch overseas trading, the second showcases the culture, leisurely life, and dress for religious women in the Netherlands, and both give off ideas that set the Dutch apart from the rest of the world. In the painting by Albert Cuyp, you can see that Netherlands is big on merchant ships as most of its wealth comes from it. Apart from economy, Netherlands
is known for its support of religious tolerance as you can see Johannes Vermeer's painting is baroque and I the woman looks Jewish by the way she dresses. Overall, both paintings led to the idea that because the Netherlands grants freedom of worship, they attract Protestants who helped the economy with their high work ethics.

B. SUPPORT YOUR THESIS:

1. a. Dutch East India Company conquered all trading and raked in profits.

b. Netherlands’s merchant marine was the largest in Europe.
They owned 16,000 ships which were half of the European total.

c. The docks of Amstel River in Netherlands, attracted many merchants and had 5,000 ships.

d. Dutch were dependent upon ships as seen in the painting.
Many ships were made as they bought whole forests. The fishing industry was the foundation for Dutch economy as they caught herring and profited greatly from it.

2. a. Netherlands was known to grant the most religious freedom.

b. Baroque was a big factor for many religions either
Protestant or Catholics as Johannes painted in the style of baroque.

c. Netherlands was also allowed Jews to enter their borders. Jewish women wore neutral colors and were required to cover their bodies and their heads.

d. This middle-class woman seems to live a comfortable life (nice window, painting in the background, table with a fancy tablecloth). She looks observant as intellects bloomed in the Netherlands.

3. a. As Netherlands kept surplus just in case for those years with crop shortages, it seems as if people live a pleasant life.

b. In France, Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes causing many Huguenots to flee for Holland.

c. Calvinists can contribute well to the economy of the Netherlands
as they believed hard work was a big factor.

d. In the two Dutch paintings, life looked at ease as the water represents tranquility and peace. Netherlands didn't promote war as much as other countries which kept finance as ease until the fight against Louis
XIV.

C. CLINCHER SENTENCES:
1. Netherlands was considered one of the prosperous countries in all of Europe as Dutch wealth came from exports and buying in bulks as shown in the painting with numerous merchant ships.

2. Culture of religion and of woman is expressed in the simple baroque painting of the Young Woman with a Water Pitcher.

3. Economy and culture come hand in hand as the Netherlands attracted man of different races and religion with is religious tolerance and trade centers.

D. CONCLUDING STATEMENT:
Even from a simple detail in the painting, there are many ideas of economy and culture that can be expressed since this did take place in the wondrous "golden age of the Netherlands."
