ON WITH LIBERALISM! Conservatives like Metternich wanted to beat down these radical ideas. But who had such time to think of ideas? The professors did, and that's why the Carlsbad Decrees cracked down hardest on them. Liberalists called for change in the country, equality before all people, and to an extent, universal suffrage. But the conservatives wanted a rigid social ladder of the monarchy, aristocracy, and respectable commoners. Most of the countries at this time were at one point or another conservative, hence giving this time period the name 'Age of Metternich'.
